    Project description

    The general aim is study pathophysiology and management of acute brain injury in humans with the ultimate goal to develop the NIC and the clinical management in order to improve clinical outcome.

    A unique platform for explorative research has been established at the kort för nicolas unit including several corner stones:

    1. Standardized care – A standardized clinical protocol struktur, corresponding to the concept of good laboratory practice (GLP), has been developed and implemented in the NIC unit.
    2. Multimodality monitoring – Technical methods are available for monitoring of for example intracranial pressure (ICP), systemic blood pressure, cerebral perfusion pressure (CPP), neurochemical changes (e.g. energy metabolites and biomarkers), neurophysiology (EEG changes), brain temperature, brain tissue oxygen pressure, venous oxygen saturation, cerebral blood flow velocity and intracranial compliance.
    3. Computerized uppgifter management struktur – The Odin browser has been developed and implemented in the kort för nicolas unit for collection, analysis and visualization of high resolution monitoring data.

      Risk of brain haemorrhage appears transmissible via blood transfusion

      A major study published in JAMA led by researchers at Karolinska Institutet suggests that a possible cause of spontaneous brain haemorrhage could be transmitted via blood transfusion. At the same time, it is very unlikely that anyone should suffer a brain haemorrhage after receiving donated blood.

      The findings suggest that some factor that can give rise to spontaneous brain haemorrhages can be spread through blood transfusion. However, as only per cent of the donors in the study subsequently suffered recurring brain haemorrhages there were consequently only a few affected patients.

      “Blood transfusions are relatively common, which makes possible negative effects an important public health issue,” says the study’s last author Gustaf Edgren, researcher at the Department of Medicine, Karolinska Institutet (Solna) and specialist physician at Södersjukhuset. “However, in this case, it’s very unlikely that you’d suffer a brain haemorrhage from something transmitted through a transfusion.”
